South African doctors have reportedly confirmed that the man who had a nine-hour penis transplant three months ago has made full recovery.

South African doctors have reportedly confirmed that the man who had a nine-hour penis transplant three months ago has made full recovery.

The unidentified patient, 21, had his penis amputated three years ago following a botched circumcision at a traditional initiation ceremony.  

The ground-breaking operation took place at the Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town on December 11, 2014. The patient received his new penis from a deceased donor.

The doctors are happy to announce to the world that the exercise was successful given the patient’s full recovery – he regained all his urinary and reproductive functions.

 ‘We’ve proved that it can be done — we can give someone an organ that is just as good as the one that he had,’ head of plastic reconstructive surgery at Stellenbosch University, Professor Frank Graewe said.

He added; ‘It was a privilege to be part of this first successful penis transplant in the world.’

A Chinese man had undergone the same process in 2006 but doctors removed the organ two weeks later due to what was described as ‘a severe psychological problem of the recipient and his wife.’
